Review: Hunting Lila

my thoughts in a few words: An explosive blend of the supernatural, mystery, and kick-butt action, followed by a mind-fizzling romance between two characters we're forced to adore, Hunting Lila allows for ZERO dull moments—it drove me into the wee hours of the morning.

hooking first line: "Only when the tip of the knife started to shave against the white of his eye like a scalpel about to pierce a boil, did I realise that I was the one holding it."

Rating: Perfect Bed Partner | Simon & Scuster UK • Paranormal Romance • 8/5/11 • under $10

17-year-old Lila has two secrets she's prepared to take to the grave. The first is that she can move things just by looking at them. The second is that she's been in love with her brother's best friend, Alex, since forever.

After a mugging exposes her unique ability, Lila decides to run to the only people she can trust - her brother and Alex. They live in Southern California where they work for a secret organisation called The Unit, and Lila discovers that the two of them are hunting down the men who murdered her mother five years before. And that they've found them. In a world where nothing and no one is quite as they seem, Lila quickly realises that she is not alone - there are others out there just like her - people with special powers -and her mother's killer is one of them...
I was intensely bullied into reading this book, and, boy, do I have to THANK MY TWITTER ATTACKERS (you, you, and you know who you are), because this story would've been left to rot on my bookshelf for who knows how long. I realize now that it was criminal of me to leave what turned out to be such a fantastic story buried.

I've been going through a mega irritating blogging/reading funk and the excitement of Hunting Lila helped me slowly return to the world and to the things I love. Alderson immediately shoves us into a situation of life-altering peril, in which Lila is about to stab a would-be mugger in the eye! First-liners have been known to make me arch a brow in a cynical gesture, laugh my tail off, or tantalize my curious nature. With Hunting Lila my eyes sort of popped, because despite the rumors, I hadn't been expecting, well, that to happen... and so quickly! The story never falters in pacing either, because we're shipped off to California alongside Lila directly after. Lila herself saturates the story with heartbreaking confusion and loneliness, and with insight into two amazing characters who nearly outshine her. Oh, Jack, Alex, the two of you truly made this story that much more fun to read. The relationship shared between the three is unshakeable and natural, one which incites brutal envy in us as we watch these three characters take care of and protect, motivate, and strengthen each other. Though the narration never wavers to an alternative character, we feel so connected to these three and it's their bond that makes it so effortless, despite the rockiness of the events in the plot.

From stunning action—like gun fights, missile-fast motorcycle getaways, and deflecting shady organizations bent to kill—to an overwhelming romance that is both long overdue and every bit worth the wait, Hunting Lila wrings your emotional palette while simultaneously blowing your mind with the intensity of the plot. Lila's determination to uncover the truths related to the organization manipulating her brother and crush drives us to support her snooping. And the jaw-dropping turn of events propels us to flip through the pages as quickly as possible.

It was 4:45 am when I FINALLY put this story down and I still can't get it out of my head. It has been so long since the wait for a sequel has plagued my thoughts. Losing Lila couldn't feel more elusive and far away!

He rubbed a hand across his forehead like he had a migraine. "I like you too much. Too much."
I took in such a huge gulp of oxygen that the air turned thin around me. He liked me? Alex, who I had loved my entire life, liked me. And, from the sound of it, he meant like as in like. Not as in liking a great aunt or tea with sugar. But it didn't make sense for him to like me. It didn't add up. I sat up.
"But you laughed. When she told you [how I felt], you laughed."
Alex shut his eyes for a few seconds and when he opened them he seemed to have decided something. "I was laughing, Lila, because I didn't believe her. I thought Rachel had to be joking." (207)

Asher, you have such an awesome way with words! Your reviews are always fantastic, and this one is no exception. You make me want to read this book so badly. Now, to be honest, the little excerpt is not exactly my type of romance, but if the book is as good as you say, I have to pick up a copy ASAP! Awesome review! :)

Your blog! Looks new! And awesome! And COOL! And I loves it! And YAY YOU LOVED HUNTING LILA!!! Tehehe, bullied? Attackers? Wait, I was going to PFFFT, but you're right. We damn well did a public service. YOU NEEDED TO READ THIS BOOK!

But oh, what an incredible review. I am so happy this blew you away! You so beautifully pinpointed every. freaking. reason why I love this novel and Sarah's genius talent at crafting a story. I LOVE Lila/Alex/Jack <333 And the action and romance and intensity of the plot was just one crazy rollercoaster that I'm still sad to have come off.

Where the heck is Losing Lila hiding?!

Oooh, new blog design! I love it (especially the header). And LOL. Attacker, really? I prefer...cajoler. Much more positive sounding :P. So, so happy you loved this one! Jack and Alex definitely made this book for me, and I loved Lila too (such a great heroine!). Literally can't wait for Losing Lila! So so excited. Fab review! :)

Thank you <3 Uh huh, but I know you for what you really are... attacker. But it was a positive influence so perhaps I should surrender to your choice ;P I totally did, Liz! I can't believe I waited SO LONG to read it. Alex/Jack/Lila are a trifecta of genius!! Looks like you were right about my loving this book and being tortured by the wait for the sequel! xD

Woohoo! *fist-bumps* Alex is such a lovable guy, I swear. And, yeah, let's not forget to mention hot. HE'S SMOKIN'.  <3

I love the way you broke up your reaction to the new look. I loves it lots too, so thank you <33 Thank you for doing me the kindness of pushing and pushing me to read this book. What would I do without you guys?

While I'm trying to hold off my yearning for Losing Lila, I've got to track down a copy of Fated. I will never doubt Alderson, ever, after this, so I can only imagine what I have in store for me in that story.

It is SO action-packed, it takes your breath away because almost feels like you're the one running around and performing all these strenuous stunts! *lol*

Definitely give it a whirl. If nothing else, Jack and Alex are PURELY IRRESISTIBLE.

Asher_Knight said...

Oh, you're so lucky. I can't afford it yet, but I TOTALLY WANTED TO READ FATED NEXT. I'm hoping I'll get my hands on it relatively soon, because I need my fix of Alderson's writing ALREADY.

<33 That's why I'm ecstatic to have a copy on hand, resting on my bookshelf. Makes me so happy :D

I just noticed myself. Me, I was bullied into it. And I find that my friends are generally right, so I forgive them. In fact, I encourage them to continue to do it, because, otherwise, where would I be? They've been trying to get me to read The Hunger Games forever (which is collecting dust on my bookshelf) xD

Awesome! As I said in another comment, Alex and Jack are just so irresistible, you'll AT LEAST like the story for them. :)

Asher_Knight said...

Aw, thank you, Sophia <333 I was actually a little worried I sounded rusty, given all the time I've been away and haven't really been writing xD

The characters are so fabulous, I'm 98% positive you'll love it too ;)

SO PERFECT. Soperfectsoperfectsoperfect! <3 Oh my goodness, Asher, your review made me smile and nod and say, "HECK YES!" over and over again because you described the amazingness of this book like a pro! I felt that Hunting Lila was the book that made me fall in love with reading all over again too, and it doesn't make me happier than to know it did the same thing with someone else! :)

Amazing review, Asher!! I'm so incredibly happy that you loved this book too, and now we only have to wait a few more months until the torturous wait for book 2 is over! x) <3

Asher_Knight said...

HEY, MIMI <333 Thank you *bows* I try. It was crazy how much I ended up liking it. I right away ran to check on the status of the sequel. And to see how much it would cost to buy Fated, since I'm needing another fix ;)

Now we can all wait together xDD

This one hadn't really been sticking out for me either.  I loved the cover (it felt very 50s housewife in a panic to me), but other than that wasn't really captivated by the prospect of reading it.  However!  I think your review has finally pushed me over the edge. I LOVE when books are unpredictable, and I'll save this one for a time when I need to be surprised.

Oh, I'm so excited for you. No one can resist Alex and Jack, and the relationship they each share with Lila together and separately. Plus, the action! It'll definitely keep you awake like an action movie  :)
