Review: Bourne (#3.1) (No Spoilers)

my thoughts in a few sentences: With all of our favorite elements from the first three books, Bourne is a well-welcomed addition to a series I am deeply in love with, so deeply in fact that the fall never ends. Reading about Lia, Luca, Marcello, Gabi, and crew again brought the warmest, widest smile I could physically muster on my face. While Torrent ends beautifully, it was brutally clear that not everything was resolved, and while I loved that Lisa refrained from tying everything up in a neat and pretty bow, in Bourne we witness the aftermath of that last battle and I was ridiculously pleased. It would seem peace will never settle over our favorite band of Italian knights and She-Wolves, for trouble and danger find them always, and I relish every sticky situation that catches up to them. Plus, the romance we fans have all been waiting for erupts in perfect sweetness and incites dreamy sighs of happiness. Oh, WHY couldn't Lisa just have written a fourth book? I'm certain I would've exploded in complete and profound elation!

hooking first line: ""M'lady! They approach!" the guard yelled down to us from the walls."

The River of Time Series--a Top 10 Pick for over 20 YA book bloggers in 2011! If you like romance, adventure and a dose of medieval Italian culture, you'll love WATERFALL (book 1), CASCADE (book 2) and TORRENT (book 3). Hint: They’re not just for teenagers.

BOURNE, a novella (1/3 the length of a normal novel), picks up right where TORRENT left off...Find out what has happened to men returning from the battle, gravely wounded, to the Betarrinis, fighting for the men they love, and just who is hunting them next...

You'll LOVE the River of Times series IF you like...

+intense battles that aren't overly gory but VERY satisfying for us adrenaline junkies and obsessers of sword-fighting (HUZZAH, baby!)

+a beautiful historical setting that feels authentic and believable

+sexy Italian knights who act like MEN (the kind who make you groan and swoon) and have more personality than most male characters have in their pinky finger

+empowered and kick-butt female main characters who don't sit back and let the action happen around them but instead do something CRAZY and EXCITING about it, like jumping into the thick of it

+foreign languages

+NOT ONE, but TWO rich, slow burn romances (YES! Each sister gets an amazing Italian hottie for themselves!)

+a deep family bond and well-involved, VERY LOVABLE, equally kick-butt parents

You DON'T have to worry about...

+love triangles

+heroines TRYING to be cool and kick-butt

+intimidating and overzealous implementing of Christian overtones

Fans'll LOVE Bourne because...

Our favorite characters return

Marcello, Lia, Luca, Gabi, everyone we've ever loved in this series is BACK! Is Lord Greco included in the mix, you ask? He most certainly is, and he's just as delicious and captivating as we remember, despairing and strong. Gosh, it was such a rush returning to these people who become so essential to us over the course of the series, like meeting up with family we haven't visited in a long time but gather such pleasure from seeing despite the time between us. Their voices and personalities never waver, and we are once again reminded why we clutch these books to our hearts as if they were precious gems.

We finally get a DUAL narrative

Didn't you always wonder what was fluttering around in Lia's mind? I know I did, and there is no need to wonder any longer since Lisa has finally included her perspective in the telling of this story. She is so much like her older sister, Gabi—strong and valiant and compassionate—yet very much her own person—serene, cautious, and rather confident in herself—and that quickly shines through as we read Bourne. Never once did I get the two confused or feel as if Bergren were writing the same character over and over, and slapping on different names. She didn't lose the essence of Lia as she told of events in her perspective, and that was just plain wonderful.

The romance we've been waiting for...

...is FINALLY happening. And it's so sweet and lovely and OH, the affection is divine. I lapped up those scenes like a begger would the crumbs on his plate.

It's not over yet, guys, and it may never be

And that's okay! I'll give you three reasons why: 1) It's an open path for Lisa to take should she want to continue the story, which I am COMPLETELY FOR 2) it makes perfect sense given the time period and the state of the third book and 3) I LOVE CONFLICT. And the problems that span the first three books were somewhat tied up in Torrent, however, Lisa has pulled a thread left hanging and has woven a wrenching, action-packed plot from it, leaving us gaping like fish out of water who are yearning to return and gulp more. No one should miss out on this!

We laughed together, and his hand moved to my cheek. "M'lady," he said intently, water dripping down over his face too. He leaned down, and for a second, I thought he was going to kiss me. But instead, he touched his forehead to mine. "Dare I believe that you have feelings for me?" he whispered, his lips tantalizingly close.
Which kinda freaked me out.
"You are free to believe what you wish," I whispered back with a teasing smile, edging away. "There is no law against such things." I turned back toward the door, intending to go in, but he held it shut, hovering close. Deliciously close again. Teasing me.
"Evangelia," he said, his lips practically on my ear, his breath tickling my neck. "How long shall you torment me?" (33)

Wow, Ash, thanks for the killer review. So thorough! So fun! Your recaps made me smile. And I love it when reviewers pull an excerpt from a scene that moved them. Lets me know what works for readers (I assume, but you know, I pretty much love it all...) Grazie mille, She-Wolf reviewer.

I don't know how you do it, but you managed to write a review for a novella series I was not planning to read for a while and -- oh, look! It just shot up my TBR pile! x) LOL I keep reading about this series but I have so many other books to read first that I've been putting this one off for the longest time, so awesome characters + dual narrative (love these!) + action-packed goodness = Mimi must have!

Amazing review, Asher! I love how you put subheadings in it -- it made it so much easier to gush over your review in parts! ;) <3

It's, like, my life mission to get people to read more of this series. I can't stand that there are so many more people who would actually enjoy this series. And plus, I can never have enough fellow fangirls to go all squealish :)

AGGGGGGHHHHHHH ASHER! WHY HAVEN'T I READ TORRENT YET? *bangs head against wall repeatedly* I've had an ebook version for ages, but even though I recently got an ereader, reading pdf format from Adobe Digital Editions is so annoying. I need to grab myself a print copy asap, because I LOVE this series. Waterfall and Cascade were amazing <3 AND I want to learn more about Lord Greco! AND I WANT TO READ THIS NOVELLA!

Ah! Okay. Damn you and your incredible reviews, making me all excited and antsy and eeee, I want to return back to our smexy boys and She-Wolves. OH! And you saw that a fourth book IS in fact confirmed, right? Yay! http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12866814-tributary
