PFS2012 Character Interview: Aine & Tormod from A Templar's Apprentice + Giveaway

About the Author:
Kat Black is an avid reader and writer of young adult literature. Drawn most to ancient times and places of shadow and mystery, she strives to pluck her readers out of the here and now and engross them in the possibility of what once was.

Kat has worked for twenty-two years in the Children’s book industry—more than half of that time as a designer for legendary publishing icon Walter Lorraine. With Caldecott and Newbery Medal winning artist and authors like David Macaulay, Allen Say, Lois Lowry, and Chris VanAllsburg as clients, Kat learned firsthand what it takes to make it in the amazing world of children’s publishing.

Kat lives with her family in Lynn, Massachusetts. A Templar’s Apprentice, her first book came out in 2009.

Asher: So Aine, when you first met Tormod did you think he was hot?

Aine: Lord, Woman, are ye having me on? He was a complete mess. White as a ghost, save for those infernal freckles, sick, shaking, an’ making no sense at all.

Asher: Yeah, but admit it you were attracted.

Aine: (Nearly stuttering.) Well, I didn’t have any friends save the animals and my life was pretty awful. (She leans near.) But to be honest, I thought his hair was lovely, an’ his eyes. (Her own become dreamy, then harden.) But I swear I’ll thump ye if ye tell him I said it. Hush now, he’s here.

Aine: Bit late to be coming to the party, Tor. Did ye have something more pressing to do this morning?

Tormod: Clapper yer gob, Aine, some of us have duties that require attention.

Aine: Aye. That flint an’ tinder delivery ye botched might have been something ye paid more attention to.

(Choking noises heard as a flush of red creeps up Tormod’s neckline.)

Asher: All right you two, get to your corners.

Asher: Tormod, so tell us, what did you think of the Princess? You had a couple of heated moments there.

(Aine’s hands fist tight at her side.)

Tormod: (Coughs and covers his mouth as the red creeps higher. He glances sheepishly at Aine.) She was fair fetching, I’ll not lie.

Aine: And out of your league. (She mumbles.)

Tormod: (Glaring at Aine.) Aye, Asher. She was amazing. She’s Queen, now. The Queen of England, did ye hear.

(Aine looks away)

Asher: (pauses a moment then continues) But let’s focus on the two of you. You went through a lot together. And there were moments when fans wondered if you would ever make it back, together and whole.

(Tormod and Aine eyes meet and a softness passes between them.)

Tormod: Aye. We lost a lot of good friends and it was a rough road. But we did what we must, in the end.

Aine: Aye. No matter what goes on from here, that was a momentous time.

(Tormod reaches out a hand and Aine takes it shyly.)

Asher: And it looks to me like you guys are not quite finished. (Smiles)

Tormod: Well, we did what we set out to do, but as the Templar once told me, the future is not set. Mayhap what happened was just the first of many ripples, that came from the stones dropped in the water.

I have to admit that I haven't heard of this author or her books before, but they look interesting! I like Aine's accent. I don't thinkw e come across characters with accents often in YA literature. The covers of her books look pretty cool, though I won't be entering this giveaway. Good luck everyone!

I haven't heard of these! But I love the covers a ton (yay swords and daggers!) and this interview was great. Character interviews are always fun.
